The car Landa uses to arrive at the farm is an open military vehicle. The identification as a Mercedes-Benz W142 does not hold up for that shot, and specialist sources have also not always been consistent in naming the variant.
The vehicle used for the arrival is not a W142 limousine
At the start of Inglourious Basterds, Hans Landa approaches the farm in an open vehicle accompanied by motorcycles. The body style and visible layout of the car do not match the image of a large executive sedan that the Mercedes-Benz 320 W142 designation might suggest. The identification here refers to that arrival at the farm. Speaking generically of Landa's car can mix vehicles from different moments or project onto the film a model known for its historical association with officers.
The film catalog IMCDb identifies the farm vehicle as a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 170 VG Kübelwagen, with the W133 III reference. Other sites have called it a 170 VK. The discrepancy makes it advisable to present the specialist identification with its degree of certainty, rather than combining data from different variants to produce an apparently exact listing. The W142 label, in particular, is incompatible with that identification of the open vehicle.
Kübelwagen here describes a class of open military vehicle and should not automatically be understood as the well-known Volkswagen model. The word can appear associated with vehicles from several manufacturers. That distinction helps when reading catalogs without turning a generic term into a brand name. To identify a specific vehicle, the bodywork features, the documented chassis, and, when available, information from the person who supplied the vehicle for filming are still needed.
What the car adds to the scene
The arrival is felt before the interrogation begins. The movement through the landscape and the escort turn the visit into an organized presence approaching the domestic space. The car places Landa within a structure of power capable of mobilizing people and resources. The threat does not need to be expressed through aggressive driving: it comes from the fact that the convoy is heading toward a house where the viewer will learn that people are hiding.
The open vehicle makes its occupants visible and links the approach to the moment when the officer gets out. It does not function as an opaque barrier between the character and the surroundings. The staging can move from the advancing group to Landa's individual presence without losing continuity. The car sets up his entrance and then stops dominating attention, because the conflict shifts to a conversation inside the house.
The relationship with Hans Landa is therefore narrative rather than collector-oriented. The vehicle does not by itself reveal a personal preference, an exact rank, or the officer's private property. It may simply be part of the means he uses in his role. Nor is there any basis for attributing to him a purchase history, a meaningful license plate, or a modification commissioned by the character if those elements are not established in the film.
A technical listing needs provenance
Figures for displacement, horsepower, top speed, or production numbers for a historic model are only useful when the variant has been identified with certainty. Applying the W142 specifications to the car in the scene would be especially misleading: it would amount to data from another vehicle presented as though it described the object filmed. Until that identification discrepancy is resolved, the specifications of one variant cannot be safely assigned to the vehicle that appears on screen.
The historical age of the design also does not prove that every visible part in the shoot was original factory equipment. A car used as a screen vehicle may have been restored or prepared for driving, but each intervention needs documentation. It is not appropriate to assume a full reconstruction or to claim intact preservation from a single frame. The historical object, its condition during filming, and the representation offered by the film are distinct levels.
The most precise answer stays within those limits: Landa arrives at the farm in an open military Mercedes cataloged as a 170 VG, with a variant identification that should be checked against alternative names. Its role is to introduce an official convoy into the rural landscape and set up the interrogator's entrance. The film allows that use to be analyzed clearly; by itself, it does not provide a complete mechanical specification or support attribution to the W142.
