Quentin Tarantino's personal life in his own words

Quentin Tarantino's personal life in his own words

Quentin Tarantino married Israeli singer Daniella Pick in November 2018. The couple had a son in 2020 and announced the birth of a daughter in July 2022. These are events that the filmmaker and those around him made public, and they place his family life within a career known mainly for his films.

Celebrity also plays a place in his own story. In an interview with Gabriel Lerman for La Vanguardia, published in July 2021, he recalled that he expected to make a name for himself among directors, critics, and students, but had not anticipated such rapid popular recognition. He was speaking about the reach of his fame after Pulp Fiction from the perspective of many years of work.

His radio and television appearances show conversations in different tones: family comments, discussions of his decisions, and disagreements with the questions. The family he describes and the author who speaks into a microphone allow us to observe different dimensions of his biography.

Before starting a family with Daniella Pick, Tarantino had already spoken publicly about that possibility. The Talks asked him about it in October 2013. His answer left room for having children and devoting a later stage to books, without setting a fixed timetable.

Family and fatherhood in his own words

In the 2021 La Vanguardia interview, Tarantino distinguished between visiting other countries to promote his films and raising a child there. He described living with his wife’s relatives and friends as a different experience from professional travel. The relationship with Daniella Pick and fatherhood was linked to a shared everyday life across cultures.

He also explained that he enjoyed his son’s reactions and felt more emotional. When asked whether he would have made his films differently, he said he did not think fatherhood had changed him artistically, although he admitted he had considered the possibility. The answer described an emotional experience without automatically attributing an effect on his cinema to it.

The couple’s announcement released by Entertainment Tonight on July 5, 2022, confirmed the birth of their daughter on the 2nd of that month. The statement presented her as the younger sister of Leo, born in February 2020.

About the relationship with his father, Tony Tarantino, the filmmaker explained to Benjamin Secher in a 2010 interview that he had not been part of his life. The conversation was published in The Telegraph and reproduced by Gulf News. In 2015, when recalling to Dan Rather that he had seen The Good, the Bad and the Ugly with his father, he clarified that he was referring to his stepfather.

Difficult questions and long-running conversations

On January 2, 2013, Terry Gross asked him on Fresh Air about the relationship between movie violence and real violence. Tarantino expressed his annoyance and pointed out that he had been answering that question for two decades. Gross clarified that she was talking about the characters and the viewer’s experience. The exchange is part of his relationship with the press: the disagreement concerned the question and its implications. The conversation also included memories of films and comments about westerns, which take up much of the interview.

On The Big Interview in 2015, Dan Rather acknowledged that the issue of violence had been raised many times. He asked about the mix of reactions his films provoked, and Tarantino responded by talking about emotions that could feel contradictory. The dialogue continued without being reduced to a disagreement over one question. At the start of the program, the filmmaker had said he was a viewer of those interviews and had watched the one devoted to Aaron Sorkin several times. His interest in taking part was part of the conversation from the beginning.

Personal priorities and plans expressed in public

In Secher’s 2010 interview, Tarantino described making films as the activity that concentrated his efforts at that time. He compared that commitment to someone who sets out to climb a mountain: while occupied with it, that task absorbs his attention. He explained that this was the priority he gave filmmaking then and his wish to make the most of those years to work in film.

When The Talks revisited the future in 2013, he said he would like to stop directing around age 60. That same answer admitted that he might change his mind and make films later if he wanted to. In his plans for his professional path appeared film criticism and novels. He had expressed a preference about how he wanted to spend his time; that interview did not confirm the date of a final production.

The Talks also asked him whether he would watch a film based on his own life. He replied that he might feel flattered, but that he would not watch it. That reluctance adds a nuance to his public visibility: he could talk about personal experiences and still keep his distance from the idea of becoming the lead character in someone else’s biographical story.

A conversation with Empire published in July 2022 showed Tarantino as a viewer alongside his son. According to him, he had chosen what he thought were some Minions cartoons and discovered that they were Despicable Me 2. Leo became interested in the opening credits and they kept watching.

They watched it over the course of a week in short segments, with pauses that matched the child’s pace. Tarantino identified it as the first movie his son had ever seen. In that same interview, he said that he often watched Peppa Pig and liked the series.

The account offers an everyday scene from his experience as a father: accompanying an attention span that appears, pauses, and returns to the screen. The length of a viewing session depended on that shared moment. His enthusiasm as a viewer coexisted with a way of watching movies shaped by the needs and curiosity of a small child.
