The Video Archives Podcast: films, participants and format

Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary return to discussing films from a collection of tapes. Gala Avary adds another voice to a project that turns recommendation into debate.

Who speaks, and where the selection comes from

The Video Archives Podcast began on 19 July 2022 with Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary. Gala Avary takes part in the project as producer and introducing voice, as well as developing supplementary content. The stated starting point is a return to films preserved on the tapes linked to the former video rental shop where the two filmmakers worked.

That origin explains the name, but it does not exhaust the format. The history of the establishment belongs to the journey through the Video Archives video store. The podcast uses the archive as a physical selection from which to look again and discuss. A particular tape may lead to a well-known film, a rarity, or an experience that no longer matches the memory of the person recommending it decades earlier.

It is worth distinguishing between the participants even when they agree. A preference expressed by Avary does not automatically become one of Tarantino, and Gala's intervention is not merely an echo of the hosts. The exchange makes it possible to hear differences in generation, memory and criteria. The programme's identity depends on that conversation, not on presenting a single person delivering a definitive ranking.

The shared experience of those behind it provides familiarity, but does not guarantee unanimity. In a conversation between viewers who know a great deal about film, the interest may lie in which detail changes an assessment, or in why a sequence works for one person and not another. That disagreement is more informative than an isolated score if it is listened to alongside the arguments that produce it.

The first episode and the move to a cinema

The inaugural episode, identified as Dark Star / Cocaine Cowboys, is dated 19 July 2022 in the programme archive. Earwolf's presentation explains that Dark Star, John Carpenter's 1974 film, was one of Roger Avary's favourites. It is a small but important example of attribution: the description names Roger and does not authorise extending that superlative to Quentin.

The pairing makes it possible to recognise one of the format's possibilities. Two films can share an episode without belonging to the same franchise or genre. The conversation creates the link and provides a context for moving from one to the other. The listener can use that combination as a programme of their own, provided they do not assume that the order amounts to a hierarchy of quality.

Listening after seeing the films makes it easier to follow references to situations and endings. Listening beforehand may spark curiosity, but it can also reveal important parts of the plot. As a guide to use, it is sensible to treat these programmes as extended critical conversations, not as publicity trailers designed solely to preserve surprises. The pleasure of returning to a scene often carries more weight than the obligation to keep it secret.

The project had a public extension at the New Beverly in September 2022. The cinema announced a double bill of The One Armed Executioner and Blind Rage, with presentations by Tarantino and Avary, for 17 and 18 September. The announcement, published on 6 September, documents the relationship between the podcast and exhibition, without turning those past dates into current information about tickets or screenings.

That move to the cinema changes the framework of the discussion. A recommendation heard alone leads to a screening where the reactions of other viewers become part of the experience. The programme's films exist before and after their commentators, but the encounter allows the spoken enthusiasm to be tested in a theatre. The conversation thus returns to the collective space it so often describes.

How to find your way around the project

The episode archive allows searches by title, not only by guest celebrity or by a controversial phrase taken out of context. That way of browsing it is useful if you are interested in a particular film: it identifies the relevant conversation and avoids attributing to the programme an opinion taken from another podcast. Tarantino has appeared in many interviews, and not all of them belong to Video Archives.

The supplementary content must also be distinguished. The Gala Show is presented as a programme of conversations between Gala Avary and guests, associated with Video Archives, but with its own identity. Follow-up segments and interviews can expand on a theme without replacing the main episode. Confusing their names or presenters makes it harder to locate the contribution you want to discuss.

Access conditions, platforms and scheduling may change. For a specific listening session, it is better to pay attention to the official listing and its date, rather than turning the 2022 distribution into a permanent promise. The historical examples mentioned here serve to explain the format and its participants; they do not function as an up-to-date schedule of new releases.

The link with the New Beverly Cinema makes it possible to move on from the recorded conversation to the programme. Both activities share a wish to keep films in circulation, even if their timings differ. The podcast allows an argument to be revisited; the cinema gathers an audience for a screening whose circumstances can never be repeated. Listening and viewing thus offer two complementary ways of discussing the same cinema.
