The Movie Critic: announcements, abandonment and Tarantino's explanations

The Movie Critic was presented as Tarantino's next feature, but the director abandoned that path. His statements make it possible to reconstruct the project without turning casting rumours into a film that was ever actually shot.

2023: a film critic in California

In May 2023, during Cannes, Quentin Tarantino explained to Deadline that The Movie Critic would be set in California in 1977. The character was inspired by a little-known critic who wrote about film in an adult magazine that the director had read when he was young. He also made it clear that the story would not centre on Pauline Kael, an identification that had circulated before those statements.

The precision shifted the interest from a major institutional figure to a marginal voice. The appeal Tarantino described had to do with the personality of that writing: a direct, irreverent perspective, far removed from the solemnity of other critical spaces. Those comments make it possible to understand the origin of the idea, but they do not provide a complete synopsis or a definitive list of scenes.

The 1977 setting connected the project with a period of transformation in American cinema. The critic could observe an industrial shift while taking part in the culture of cinemas, magazines and conversations around him. That affinity with Tarantino's cinephile interests helps explain the enthusiasm the announcement generated. It does not, however, entitle anyone to attribute to the script any historical debate that happened to fit that year.

The initial information also included the intention to work with a protagonist of a certain age, different from some of the director's regular stars. As with any project in development, those ideas could change. A comment about the intended profile is not the same as a casting contract, just as a planned start date does not prove that filming began.

2024: the planned film stops moving forward

In April 2024, the trade press reported that Tarantino had decided not to continue with The Movie Critic. The news came after months in which the project had been linked with Brad Pitt and with the idea of the director's tenth feature. The abandonment made it necessary to separate what had been announced, what had been discussed during development, and what had actually been brought to fruition.

There is no finished The Movie Critic film that can be analysed as a released work. Nor do the rumours allow a complete cast list or a definitive plot to be reconstructed with certainty. The public history of the project is made up of the author's statements and dated trade information. Its interest lies in following how an idea that seemed close to filming ceased to occupy that place.

The association with Brad Pitt also caused confusion with the return of Cliff Booth in another project written by Tarantino. Sharing an actor or a stage of development does not prove that two scripts are the same. The distinction became clearer when the director later spoke about the origin of both works and the separation between their concepts.

The abandonment also does not allow anyone to decide in advance which will be Tarantino's final film. His intention to limit the number of feature films has been the subject of many statements, but a rule expressed publicly does not turn every announced project into an inevitable destination. The chronology must preserve the change of decision rather than retrospectively correcting every announcement as if it had never existed.

2025: the director explains his change of interest

In an August 2025 interview with The Church of Tarantino, the filmmaker explained that the idea had gone through a conception as an eight-part series and that he did not feel enough enthusiasm to devote the next stretch of his career to it as a film. His comments placed the decision within his own creative assessment. The explanation offers a reason attributed to the author, rather than speculation about funding disputes or a studio rejection.

He also distinguished The Movie Critic from the project centred on Cliff Booth. That clarification is relevant because the proximity of the reports had encouraged the idea of a direct transformation. The later feature about Booth, directed by David Fincher from a Tarantino script, belongs to another collaboration. The continuity of his work as a writer does not mean that he automatically reactivated the abandoned title.

A review of the information available up to October 2026 does not provide a release or any confirmed reactivation of The Movie Critic. The documented status remains that of a project that stopped moving forward, publicly explained by its author. That wording makes it possible to update the story if a new statement appears, without presenting a future possibility as something already committed to.

An announcement of a film needs to be distinguished from its release: a planned date can disappear before there is even a single shot intended for the final edit.

The page on statements on retirement and the final film sets out the broader debate. The Movie Critic has a more specific trajectory: an inspiration described in 2023, an abandonment known in 2024 and a retrospective explanation in 2025. The sequence shows that developing a story and deciding to turn it into a full film are different steps, even when the announcement has already created enormous anticipation.
