A character's voice can fill the musical space of a scene on its own. To call it a cappella singing, it is necessary to distinguish it from whistling, a guitar, or a recorded song that keeps playing.
A voice without accompaniment has a tangible presence
Singing a cappella means singing without instrumental accompaniment. It is not enough that the character is not shown playing an instrument: they may be singing over a recording that the audience can hear. The distinction is important in Tarantino's cinema, where characters often physically take part in songs played through radios or domestic devices.
In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the group of young women linked to Manson sing I’ll Never Say Never to Always as they travel through the city. Supervisor Mary Ramos identified the song as material written by Manson. The passage offers a recognisable example of voices gathered without the support of a visible band or a pop recording organising the scene.
Shared singing makes belonging audible. The voices coordinate and occupy public space together. For anyone who recognises the young women or knows the historical context, that familiarity produces an unease that does not depend on the tune being aggressive. The appearance of conviviality and the viewer's knowledge do not match. The effect arises from that distance, without needing to reproduce the lyrics.
Not every moment of voice is an example of a cappella
Daisy sings Jim Jones at Botany Bay in The Hateful Eight, but accompanies herself on a guitar. Her performance is music within the fiction and may offer an intimate exposure of the voice, although it is not a cappella. The instrument matters because Ruth physically intervenes in it and changes the situation. Leaving it out of the description would erase a central part of the scene.
Butch sings along with Flowers on the Wall in the car in Pulp Fiction. The Statler Brothers recording remains part of what is heard. Similarly, mouthing the words or singing along with a song does not turn the whole track into a solitary performance by the actor. The character can emotionally appropriate a piece of music without replacing the recorded voice.
Elle Driver whistles Twisted Nerve in Kill Bill. It is a vocal action in the broad sense, but not a sung song with lyrics. Moreover, the sound design of the sequence extends the melody beyond the isolated gesture. Grouping whistling, humming, and a cappella singing under the same category would prevent us from appreciating the different ways a body can take part in music.
The act of singing changes who produces the sound
When a voice comes from the character, music is no longer something they receive exclusively. The body takes part in its production and may show confidence, hesitation, playfulness, or a desire to belong. The meaning does not depend on the performance being professional. Sometimes an imperfect voice makes the shared situation more visible than a polished recording does.
In the group of young women in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, singing does not function as a formal performance for a seated audience. It accompanies an activity and makes a bond between those performing it perceptible. The scene can observe that bond without turning the song into a sufficient explanation for their later actions. Singing together is not an automatic cause of violence.
The difference is related to diegetic music: the voices belong to the narrated world and can be heard by other people in that world. That does not establish how the sound was recorded during filming. A performance presented as spontaneous may require musical and mixing work that the image does not show.
The interest of these passages lies in returning the song to a body and a situation. The voice without accompaniment is left exposed to its own rhythm and to the space around it. Keeping the category precise allows us to recognise that effect when it occurs, without inventing a repertoire of a cappella performances from scenes where a guitar, a radio, or an orchestra remain essential.
