Hellstrom and the supposed black trench coat: distinguishing the uniform from the overcoat

Hellstrom’s image in La Louisiane is built around his black uniform. A leather trench coat should not replace that description through association with other screen agents.

In the tavern, a uniform is visible

Major Hellstrom appears in the tavern wearing a black uniform, not the supposed leather overcoat that is sometimes used to describe him. The jacket, shirt, tie and insignia make up an outfit that is recognisably institutional. Calling that ensemble a trench coat confuses a long outer garment with the item that structures his presence during the conversation.

The mistake is understandable because of espionage-film iconography: the dark coat and hat have repeatedly been associated with secret police agents. However, a genre convention does not automatically identify the costume of a specific character. It is necessary to start from the scene and distinguish what is seen from what the viewer expects to find.

Authority remains visible

The uniform means that Hellstrom does not need to hide his position as he approaches Hicox’s group. He can present himself as an interested participant in the conversation, but the sign of his authority is already in plain view. This changes the meaning of his questions: an apparently social remark comes from someone who may act against his interlocutors.

The clothing also sets him apart within the table composition. His presence imposes a new relationship among the occupants, even though the conversation for a time maintains the appearance of leisure. The costume works with August Diehl’s performance by turning the familiarity of the game into a situation under surveillance.

This visual function does not guarantee historical accuracy. Identifying the character with the Gestapo and the appearance of his uniform are elements of fiction that must be analysed separately. Not every political police official dressed the same way, nor does the colour black allow a full military biography to be inferred. Nor is it appropriate to invent a second affiliation in order to resolve any discrepancy in insignia.

Do not assign to the leather a function that is not documented

Describing materials requires more care than identifying a silhouette. A dark image is not enough to claim that a jacket is leather; the sheen also depends on lighting and finish. Without a costume record or an authenticated item, it is not reliable to specify leather, maker, pattern cutting or ageing treatment.

In the tavern sequence, the interest of the costume lies in its relationship to authority and infiltration. Hellstrom’s visible uniform contrasts with the uniforms other characters use as cover. Analysing that difference makes it possible to understand the scene without adding a non-existent overcoat or a manufacturing history that has not been verified.
