The car Landa arrives in at the farm is an open military vehicle. The identification as a Mercedes-Benz W142 does not hold for that shot, and specialist sources have not always been consistent in naming the variant.
The vehicle used for the arrival is not a W142 limousine
At the start of Inglourious Basterds, Hans Landa approaches the farm in an open vehicle accompanied by motorcycles. The bodywork and the visible layout of the car do not match the image of a large executive saloon that the designation Mercedes-Benz 320 W142 usually suggests. The identification here refers to that arrival at the farm. Speaking generically of Landa's car can mix vehicles from different moments or transfer a model known for its historical association with officers into the film.
The IMCDb film catalogue identifies the vehicle at the farm as a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 170 VG Kübelwagen, with the reference W133 III. Other pages have called it a 170 VK. The discrepancy means the specialist identification should be presented with its degree of certainty, rather than combining details from different variants to produce an apparently precise record. The W142 label, in particular, is incompatible with that identification of the open vehicle.
Kübelwagen here describes a class of open military vehicle and should not automatically be understood as the well-known Volkswagen model. The word can appear in connection with vehicles from several manufacturers. That distinction helps when reading catalogues without turning a generic term into a brand. To identify a specific vehicle, the bodywork, the documented chassis and, where available, the information from whoever supplied the vehicle for filming are still needed.
What the car adds to the scene
The arrival is sensed before the questioning begins. The movement through the landscape and the escort turn the visit into an organised presence approaching the domestic space. The car places Landa within a structure of power capable of mobilising people and resources. The threat does not need to be expressed through aggressive driving: it comes from the entourage heading towards a house where the viewer will learn that people are hiding.
The open vehicle allows the occupants to be seen and links the approach to the moment when the officer gets out. It does not function as an opaque barrier between the character and his surroundings. The staging can move from the advancing group to Landa's individual presence without losing continuity. The car prepares his entrance and then stops dominating attention, because the conflict shifts to a conversation inside the house.
The relationship with Hans Landa is therefore narrative rather than collector-oriented. The vehicle does not by itself reveal a personal preference, an exact rank or a private car owned by the officer. It may form part of the means he uses in his role. Nor is there any basis for attributing to him a history of acquisition, a significant registration number or a modification commissioned by the character if those elements are not established in the film.
A technical record needs a provenance
Figures for engine capacity, power, top speed or production for a historical model are only useful when the variant has been identified with confidence. Applying the specifications of the W142 to the car in the scene would be especially misleading: it would amount to data from another vehicle presented as though they described the object filmed. While that identification discrepancy remains, the specifications of one variant cannot be safely attributed to the piece seen on screen.
The historical age of the design also does not mean that every visible part in the shoot was original from the factory. A car used as a screen vehicle may have been restored or prepared for driving, but each intervention needs documentation. It is not appropriate to assume a complete rebuild or to claim untouched preservation from a single frame. The historical object, its condition during filming and the representation offered by the film are distinct levels.
The most precise answer stays within those limits: Landa arrives at the farm in an open military Mercedes catalogued as a 170 VG, with a variant identification that should be checked against alternative names. Its role is to introduce an official convoy into the rural landscape and prepare the interrogator's entrance. The film allows that use to be analysed clearly; on its own, it does not provide a complete mechanical record or support attribution to the W142.
